The blues in Josh Simpson's Blue New Mexico series are based on the color of light emitted from uranium fuel rods glowing below 40 feet of crystal water within the core of a nuclear reactor. To achieve the intense color, Simpson melts metallic silver onto the molten surface of a dark glass.
