Jiri Harcuba: Chaim Soutine

Jiri Harcuba (1928-2013) was a widely respected artist and educator whose specialty was portraiture in engraved glass. This stunning work by the Czech master depicts the Expressionist painter Chaim Soutine (1893-1943). Harcuba used spare sculptural cuts and subtle optical effects to create the profiles of his subjects. "By engraving," Harcuba said, "we leave traces, traces of ourselves." He added, "I show the relationship between prehistoric carving and contemporary art ... linking the past and the future."
