Katherine Gray: River Rock Bowl, Black
This sculpture is by Katherine Gray.
The iridescence in Katherine Gray’s work is created when microscopically thin layers of vaporized metallic oxides, layered with a coatings of vaporized quartz, are applied to the surface of the glass, a technology developed by NASA for glass panels used on rockets and space shuttles. Due to the different way these deposits are distributed on a sandblasted surface, the glass looks to be different colors from different angles.
Gray was selected as one of the 100 artists included in New Glass Now, a global survey of contemporary glass at The Corning Museum of Glass that opened in May 2019.
